In my last 8 or so months at Deliveroo, I was the interim Head of Content Design. While I'd much rather be an individual contributor than a team lead (for the moment), I'm proud of what I did in that role.
Here's what I took on:
- Management: Took over our content design internship program and directly managed and mentored our first team intern. At the end of her internship, I hired her (she wrote up her story). I kept the entire content team informed about organizational changes and made sure their questions were answered.
- Recruitment: Quickly hired two senior freelance content designers to fill urgent needs, trained new recruitment coordinators on content design, and hired one full time senior content designer (the most senior person to join our team to date). I conducted hundreds of interviews, including for our new VP of experience and senior managers.
- Development: Alongside my heads of in product design and research, I rewrote our levels and expectations framework to align more with engineering. It was an initiative to better support our team during tech team wide promotion discussions.
- Craft: At the behest of our CTO and new managers, I outlined what could be expected of a content designer at each stage in the process and got buy in from my team. I ran weekly standups and crits to maintain a high standard of work (and make sure everyone was enjoying what they were doing!).
- Culture: I wrote writing guidelines, edited, and contributed to our deliveroo.design blog which was frequently cited by candidates as a reason they decided to interview with us.
